My 8wk old Golden Retriever puppy get up every 2 hours ALL night to go pee, is this normal?

We’ve been to the vet and he tested positive for a UTI (urinary tract infection). The vet told us these symptoms of frequent peeing especially all night long should clear up in 48 hours of being on his medications, but he is still getting up just as much and it almost seems worse during the day then before……ANY SUGGESTIONS??? We also have 3 young children, 5 yrs, 3 yrs, and 18 months, and both me and my husband can’t handle the lack of sleep for much longer:(
My vet said there is no reason for him to have a UTI, it just happened, NOTHING to do with the breeder or me. Also I know puppies are a lot of work and need to go out often. I’m not a first time owner. But every 2 hours or more often all night, every night, I have never experienced before. My vet said if my pup didn’t have this UTI he should sleep 6 hours easily. He’s not from a kennel, just a good family, who they themselves have 3 children the same age as mine. It’s ridiculous to say, someone shouldn’t sell a puppy to someone with children, how discriminatory of you!
We do take food/treats/water away 2 hrs. before bedtime. He is crated all night, but cries every 2 hours or 1 1/2 hr. we come down and take him outside, and he pees everytime. Sometimes he cries right after we put him back in the crate and he take him out again and he PEES, we’ve tried ignoring him for a few minutes when he cries right after he’s been out, but we find he has accidents in his crate if we don’t get him outside immediately…
Sorry but I HAVE to ask, are you some of you NOT reading all the info. I have provided?? La vita, my pup has tested POSITIVE for a UTI, (urinary tract infection), he is peeing way more than normal. I am not ill equipped to deal with a new puppy.
also you la vita, you suggest rehoming him??!!! This is exactly the kind of thinking of someone who should NEVER own a dog. You don’t buy a dog on some whim and then get rid of him when he is sick!! I hope you don’t own any animals…..shame on you!

Oh how I sympathise (just been there). Yes, once on antibiotics, if this is just a simple case of UTI, you should be seeing some improvement within 48 hours.

If he’s not responding to these antibiotics, he needs to go back (with another pee sample to have the situation checked) to see your vet. He will probably want to do further tests, like a scan of his bladder (did he check his urine for the Ph balance? - my puppy’s urine was way too alkaline, there were crystals in her urine, and also white cells) to make sure he doesn’t have actual bladder stones forming, and a blood workup to check kidney function. And so on.

I suggest you keep his breeder advised of what’s going on because in the end, with the full agreement of my vet, I sadly had to take my puppy back to be sorted out. I incurred approaching £100 in vet fees as it was, and with a doubtful prognosis in terms of what further treatment might be needed, felt this was the only thing to do.

Give the medication time to work. If after 48 hours there is no change then get back to the vet. Did they do a Urine culture?

As for your lack of sleep, this was something to think of before getting a puppy. A puppy is a lot of work and commitment. People do not die from lack of sleep. Work out a schedule with your husband.

I am really surprised any reputable breeder would have put one of their puppies in a home with someone with so many young children.

It is also odd that you already have an 8 week old puppy who you have had into the vet for the UTI, which suggests that some disreputable breeder sold you an underage puppy.

take him back to the vet. the infection hasn’t cleared and will probably need more antibiotics

When house training a puppy, it is said that you should take them out every hour for their age in months, until they are 1 yr old.

So, a 2 month old puppy should be taken out every 2 hrs to go potty.

With that said, his potty time is now on a schedule, and except for the lack of sleep, it really isn’t such a bad thing.

If you can, set up a room with no carpet & wee pads so he can go inside. He might not like it and want to go out anyway, but it is worth trying so you can get some sleep.

I would give the medication time to work, but if it doesn’t work soon, take him back to the vet. There may be some other underlying problem which won’t allow the infection to clear up.

I agree with Uhave2 on this one! If you don’t have the time to dedicate to a puppy don’t get one. Puppies that young urinate a lot and have to be taken out on a regularly scheduled basis. With a URI factored in they have to be taken out constantly until the URI is gone then get them back on the regular schedule.

How long ago did he test positive? The medication may not of worked, or it may still be bothering him. Or, it’s just the joys of early puppy hood.

I am going through the same thing with my new puppy. But he has roudnworm so it is diarhea. I’m glad I am not the only one going through this. If the meds don’t seem to be working, give your vet a call. Your puppy may be resistant to the meds and may need to try something else. Even when he is better, you will still have to get up in the middle of the night. At 8 weeks they can not make it through the night. My pup is 13 weeks and I took him out 4 times in the middle of the night this morning. Just remember, this is only temporary. Soon your pup will feel better and get a little older and you will be able to make wonderful memories together. Hang in there and I will too! Congrats on your new pup. That is an awesome breed.

    If you:

    1) do not provide any food, treats or water to your pups after say 7-8PM, and

    2) crate your pup overnight, giving him just enough room to move around a little but not enough to have a place to potty in his crate:

then that should curb "normal" (not UTI-based) overnight pee breaks and overnight accidents pretty quickly.

We did these two things and our pups stopped needing regular overnight pee breaks w/in 2 days of coming home with us.

If you leave food and water out - then yes pups of this age may need overnight potty breaks.

UTI in male puppies is unsual.

Uh, yes. Did it not occur to you that a puppy is a PUPPY and needs to relieve itself about every 2-3 hours, 24 hours a day?? I’m VERY, very surprised that your veterinarian would medicate a puppy for a normal behavior such as this.

When I had my pup, I dutifully got up 3-4 times a night for about a month until his bladder control was better. Yes, I didn’t get any sleep, and yes, I was a bit of a zombie at work, but I knew that I had a PUPPY and that this is what puppies do.

You may want to consider rehoming the puppy; it sounds as if you are ill-equipped to care for him and you’re running yourselves thin.

    aren’t puppies fun?

ask your vet about another medication if the first one didn’t work.
