How long will a urinary Tract Infection last in cats? what are the stages of recovery?

My female cat just turned 2 years old. Three days ago, she jumped up on the bed and urinated (blood) while I was sitting there. The next day I took her to the Vet. The vets diagnosis was a urinary tract infection. He gave her a shot of antibiotics that also helped with inflammation and cramps. Before we left his office I asked him what to expect. He said that it should take about 10 days to get rid of. He also said that I should expect the cat to urinate more blood. He said that the blood in the urine is the infection coming out. He gave me antibiotics in a pill form that I had to give my cat one time daily. He said to crush the pill into a powder, put in into a syringe (no needle) and spray it into the side of her mouth. He also gave me a prescription food (Hills) for urinary tract infections.

The next two days went better. There wasn’t any blood in the cats urine. She wasn’t using the litter box as frequently and when she did use the litter box it seemed as if she was urinating normally. Day three, she started urinating small amounts of blood again. She started licking herself more frequently and is in and out of the litter box. She still seems playful, but I’m very worried about her.

As I said above, the cat is two years old. I’ve fed her Innova Evo (dry food) since I got her. I make sure that she has fresh water at least 2-3 times a day, and it seems as if I’m always cleaning her litter box.

I’m just wondering if what the Vet said sounds right? Anytime you urinate blood I know it cant be good, but is that normal for day 3 and 4? and if so, why didn’t she urinate blood after leaving the vets office and the 2nd day, was it the shot he gave her?

Serious answers will be greatly appreciated, more than you’ll ever know!

I plan on changing her to wet food after this ordeal is over (if she makes it). This is an extremely stressful situation.
When I said that she has fresh water 2-3 times a day, I meant that she has access to water 24/7, but that I get her new water 2-3 times daily.

My two that were prone to UTIs seemed to begin feeling better within a few days and usually by the end of the first week of medicine. They got two weeks worth of antibiotics but the bloody urine would clear up quickly. Since she started bleeding again, call the vet with that information. He may just note it in her record and he may increase or change her medicine.

Go ahead and change her to wet food now. Dry food is the worst thing to give cats, especially with urinary tract problems, but the vets push it. Kitties are not big water drinkers and get most of their moisture from their food. In fact when you feed her wet food, put a little warm water in it and stir it until it is mushy. This serves 2 purposes–it keeps the food moist and adds more moisture. I’ve done this for years and my cats seem to like it, they empty the bowls. See the link below for more information about how diet affects a cats health. It is a good website, easy to read, written by a veterinarian and cat lover.

Also, another hint I learned here on Answers and worked for me. If you are using a clay (dusty) litter, change it to a less or dust free formula. Reason is when kitty gets in the box, they dig and stir the dust up. As they urinate, the dust particles cling to their wet bottoms and can irritate the urinary tract. My little Bonnie had had 3 UTI in that many months, so what could it hurt to change litter? I went to the ground wheat, Swheat, and she did not have another UTI after that. Other dust free litters are the pellets, Yesterday’s News and Feline Pine, the silicone crystals or the ground corn, Worlds Best Cat Litter.

Your vet did have a good idea the way he told you to give her the pill crush with water in a syringe. I have done this with my own and we do this with the rescues I volunteer with. Much easier than giving a pill as a solid!

    Purrs to you and kitty.

Antibiotics don’t work overnight. If your cats infection is bad enough, it may take up to a week to stop seeing blood in the urine.
When the antibiotics are over, I reccomend taking your cat back to the vet to get the urine analysed again - sometimes it can take more than one bout of antibiotics to take care of it.

You say…….."she has fresh water at least 2-3 times a day"…….Why doesn’t she have fresh water available 24/7 ???? A cat that eats dry food needs a LOT of fresh water…….always available.

Since she didn’t exhibit the symptoms that the vet said she would, right after coming home, but started to urinate blood on days 3 & 4, I think you should CALL the vet and explain the situation to him. She may need a stronger antibiotic.

When any of my cats had UTIs, they never got to the "blood in pee" stage, because I recognized the symptoms early enough to get them into the vet more quickly. It still took a complete round of meds to cure the UTI…….and one of my cats had to have a 2nd round…..with STRONGER medicine.

My cats had never had any urinary tract problems until I gave them some Purina for INDOOR CATS formula. Then, 3 of them got UTIs……so I dumped THAT food, and never bought any more of it. They’ve been fine ever since…….and they still eat dry food…..just not the "indoor" formula.

Hope your cat feels better soon……..Be sure to let the vet know what’s going on…ASAP….so he can get her on a different medicine if needed. Good luck.

at least a week but could last up to three my guess it will last two weeks as long as she is on good medication that’s helping her and if your noticing improvement then it should heal fast but if she’s just getting worse or not changing take her back to the vet there could be better medicine that well help her
    poor kitty
    hope she gets better soon

My last cat suffered from this all her life and she lived to be 15 she had it about two to three times per year so i know full well how frustrating it feels just waiting for it to improve,my cat was also given an antibiotic jab along with a course of antibiotic tablets(Betamox)to be given one tablet twice a day for 10 days and was told i wouldn’t see an improvement for at least 3-4 days which was what it was like,

once the blood stopped after a few days it never returned as it is for your cat now,she simply seemed better but needed to finish the course of 10 days, then that was the end of it until the next attack of urinary infection(Cystitis)sometimes she would get a few months gap before she got it again,

urinating small amounts of blood and frequent visits to her litter shows its very inflamed again so really hasn’t improved as it should this happened with my cat only the once and she was put on a different kind of antibiotic, then it was discovered which was right for her,

after that it always cleared up normally with no problems,my vet recommended that i give my cat bottled water as he said chlorine in tap water irritated her bladder lining,if im honest i noticed the change in her rather quickly, she had fewer attacks and when she did it cleared up sooner than usual though i still needed to give her the full course of tablets,

my vet never said anything about the blood being the infection coming out at all, just to cut dry food from her diet as i did,i know what its like having a cat have this its frustrating that we cant make the infection dissapear for good, but maybe she needs her doage altered but dont without a vets instructions,

like i said my cat tried different tablets but we found Betamox to be just right in fighting it off, hope she gets better soon for you,as its horrible seeing a cat suffer it makes us feel helpless, she will pull through as my cat survived 15 years of it,it all started for mine after being spayed.
